Welcome
Welcome to Dream for a Dollar
Even in America, for many people freedom is a dream.
For some, who struggle day-to-day to make ends meet or worry how they’ll afford the future, it is the dream of financial freedom. For others, who find themselves labeled a minority or struggle daily against the perceptions of their heritage, their class, or their deepest nature, it is a dream of social freedom.
For Travis and many others like him, who must worry about how they’ll accomplish so many basic needs and how they’ll get from here to there, whether it’s across the room or down the street to work, it is a dream of physical freedom.
We at Dream for a Dollar dream of freedom from these restrictions, and for the advances in science and medicine that will free everyone from this fight. We’re not the only ones.
That ultimate freedom will come one day, hopefully in our lifetime, but many smaller freedoms that still have great impact are attainable today. Unfortunately, so many of those freedoms come at a high cost, making financial freedom a dream just as potent to those with disabilities.
Most people do not understand the amount of money required to sustain disabled people. Even in a dual income family, the cost of updating a home, converting a bathroom or adding a first level bedroom can be out of reach for most.
Travis needs a new van. Seven years ago he discovered the freedom of driving through a program run by the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission, which funds the conversion of a vehicle for use by a disabled driver. Every seven years, they will fund a new conversion but the cost of a new van is up to the driver. That time has come, and the cost is still daunting.
Despite whatever lack of freedom we may face, there is nothing that bars the freedom of our minds, our hopes, our souls. It is for this reason that the struggle for freedom can always be won—has always been won. For this reason people have always come together to get deeds done. Dreaming and wishing alone will not get the deed done; it takes action, but put a dream and a wish behind that act and lives can be changed.
Just one dollar from you, less than the cost of a cup of coffee, can help Travis get a new van and stay on the road of freedom. Because we have a dream that one dollar—just one dollar—can change lives.
Dream with us.
Ask your friends and family to dream with you. Have them ask their friends and family to dream with them.
Let’s all dream together and see those dreams come true.
